The Hand within the Curls: Issa Meets Felicia…
Imagine a typewriter sound effect as you read each description. I did.
Felicia Leatherwood. Natural hair stylist and inspirational beauty speaker with over 26 years of experience.
Known as The Hair whisperer, she has blessed the scalps of Ava Duvernay, Jill Scott, Teyonah Parris, Kimberly Elise and other notables. You can find her work throughout television, film, and some print such as, Vogue, Elle, Essence, and Ebony magazine.
Issa Rae. Actress, Writer, Director, and Producer. I’m sure everyone’s jaws are still dusty from the season 2 finale of her hit show on HBO, ‘Insecure.’ Let me slip in my Little Richard moment, and let you know I’ve been a fan of Issa since 2011, during those ‘Awkward Black Girl‘ days. #NoBandWagon
That web series is actually one of the reasons I decided to major in film.
Over the years Issa has not only given us ABG and Insecure. She wrote her New York Times Bestseller, ‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl‘ and created Issa Rae Productions. Also known as, ‘Issa Rae Presents…’, this platform gives women and people of color an opportunity to showcase their film-work via Youtube each week.
Ok. So, where’s the part about how Issa and Miss Leatherwood (if ya nasty) met? The two actually met at the 2013 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon. Yes, that’s the link to the deets of their first encounter and how all this Black Girl Magic came to be. Yes, if you check it out you should come back and finish this post.
Alright! You came back. So, these curlfriends in the making joined forces and Felicia has been slaying Issa’s edges ever since. The hair stylist handles Rae’s tresses on and off screen. The pair even collaborated on a Youtube web series titled, ‘Head Cases.’
I’ll leave you with this last bit of useful information. Felicia has her own detangler brush and you can consider it bought, Chile.
11/7/17 UPDATE: My attempt to purchase a detangler brush has been unsuccessful. Every time I try to submit my information it ends up in error and directs me to reach out to the company. I sent an email and have yet to receive a response. I, guess in the mean time I’ll search for another brand to use. I’ve seen a few different detangle brushes on amazon that I’ve added to my cart if I can’t get my hands on one of Felicia Leatherwood’s. *sigh*
11/17/17 UPDATE: Apparently the brush is sold out. *sigh* …On to Amazon and/or Sally’s Beauty Supply for another option.
